Né le 11 juillet 1962 à Point Fortin (Trinité et Tobago), Jason Baptiste commence à composer ses premières mélodies dès cinq ans sur des bidons de lait . Issu d’une famille de musiciens, c’est en son sein qu’il fait ses premiers pas. Musicien de steel pan puis arrangeur, il semble suivre l’école de Trinidad, mais très tôt ses ambitions dépassent celles de la culture de son pays.

Contrairement à la tradition et bravant la difficulté technique, Jason choisit de jouer du « double tenor » avec quatre mailloches au lieu de deux. De l’instrument Jason extrait une densité harmonique jusque-là jamais encore atteinte et se donne la liberté d’explorer d’autres musiques telles que le jazz ou la musique classique européenne.

Guidé par les anciens trinidadiens (Earl Rodney, Errol Goodridge, Wilfred Woodley, Pat Robertson ou Fortunia Ruiz) et innovant avec la nouvelle génération (Michael et Felix Ruiz), il acquiert une renommée dans les cercles d’initiés, participe aux Pan Jazz Festivals de Trinidad et gagne en 1996 le Pan Ramajay en tant que meilleur soliste du pays.

Jason Baptiste was born in Point Fortin (Trinidad, W.I.) on the 11th of July 1962. From the age of five he began beating his first tunes on milk tins. Born into a family of musicians, it is from within this fold that he began his musical career. From “pan” player to arranger, Jason seemed to follow the typical path of Trinidadian musicians, however very soon his ambitions surpassed the culture of his own country.

Going against main stream and challenging technical difficulty, Jason chose to play “double tenor” with four sticks instead of two. With his instrument Jason produces new and richer chords which give him the freedom to venture into other musical genres like jazz or European classical music.

Guided by the Trinidadian elders (Earl Rodney, Errol Goodridge, Wilfred Woodley, Pat Robertson and Fortunia Ruiz) and innovating with the new generation (Michael and Felix Ruiz), Jason has built his reputation in the jazz circles of Trinidad and Tobago. He participated in Pan Jazz Festivals and in 1996 he captured the title of “Best Soloist” in the Pan Ramajay competition.

Since then he has been travelling around the world with many different groups…
